To the Graduate

I wish to direct a few remarks to the graduate. First, to the one who is a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, and second, to the one who is an unbeliever.

Dear young Christian: You not only have a Saviour, but a living, loving, personally interested LORD. He has a plan for your life. Maybe you didn't consider Him when you made out your curriculum four or more years ago. You had a personal ambition and may have allowed your Guidance Counselor (perhaps not a Christian) to direct you. You may not have honestly inquired, "Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?" You may not have waited upon Him to make His mind clear.

If such was the case, don't despair. Simply admit this to Him and turn to Him NOW. He will give counsel through His Word. I suggest reading Psalm 119 and meditating upon His precepts with a desire that He, by His Spirit, will give you "the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding" (Colossians 1:9). Ask Him to impress upon you what He wants you to do with your life. In faith, direct your petitions to Him with thanksgiving that He would open up a vocation for you in which you can serve and please Him! If you do this, you will be "a success" for the remaining time of your life here on earth, and more importantly, for all eternity.

Another believer has written, "I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8). May you so study the Word of God that you will "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18).

Dear unbeliever: There is only one counsel to give. You need to come to God in repentance of your sins and put your trust in the Saviour who died for you and rose again. Only then can you obtain help and direction which you need so badly for life in this ungodly world. You cannot find the answers to real, happy, peaceful, satisfying life in yourself, in education, in religion, or riches. This abundant life is only found in the Lord Jesus, who said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10).

Unless you know Christ as your Saviour, all the learning you have acquired will be of no avail in the day when you must stand before God. Earthly education can never impart the wisdom and knowledge of God, nor prepare you for His presence. The Bible says, "Ye must be born again" (John 3:7). You need a new curriculum to prepare for eternity. The textbook for this course of study is the Bible, which says, "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent" (John 17:3). You need to know Him.
