Our Prayer Book

Does a Christian need a prayer book? Not if by that is meant a book of forms to put words in his mouth. This the Holy Spirit does, even if it be with groanings which cannot be uttered.

In another sense there is a Book which is absolutely needed in prayer. Of course we mean the Word of God. The Word of God and prayer go together and cannot be separated. The reading and study of the Word of God without prayer makes one dry and tends to puff up; and prayer without the Word of God may be unintelligent and indefinite.

Let us note a few ways in which the Word of God is needful in prayer:

1. It makes us realize our need. How searching it is, bringing us to realize that we can have "no confidence in the flesh, " and must therefore be cast upon God.

2. It encourages to prayer. Our Lord frequently spoke of prayer and gave encouragement to it—"EVERY ONE THAT ASKETH RECEIVETH." He often illustrated His Father's willingness to give. Above all, He showed by example that His people should be men and women of prayer.

3. It puts petitions in our mouths not as forms, but as guides. Thus the "Lord's Prayer," gives a wonderful outline of petitions, which, rightly understood, would lead out the believing soul in true prevailing prayer.

4. It gives enlargement in prayer. Thus if a chapter is read, and then used as a vehicle for prayer, how much will there be to speak of to the Lord. Confession, supplication, thanksgiving, intercession, will all have their place.

The Bible is indeed a wonderful prayer book.
