From Darkness to Light
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness" (Genesis 1:3,4). The initial aspect of God's newly-created world was one of formless, watery dispersion enshrouded in darkness. But God who "is Light, and in Him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5), called for the light to appear in the darkness and "there was light."
This illustrates the entrance of light into the darkness of man's desperate condition of sin which has separated him from the Light of God's presence and eternal life. "For God, who commandeth the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6). Of the Lord Jesus, "the Word," it is written, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not…That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (John 1:4-9).
Christ came as God's perfect remedy for mankind's great need. He is the TRUE Light to banish the darkness. In love God sent His only begotten Son to the darkness and death of Calvary's cross, there making full payment for sin's penalty. Jesus said, "Believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light…I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness" (John 12:36,46). All who trust Him as personal Saviour are no longer darkness, but now "light in the Lord" (Ephesians 5:8).
Light is thus provided for "every man," for "whosoever" will realize his spiritual darkness and separation from God and will believe the light-giving Word of the gospel that "Christ died for our sins…He was buried and… rose again the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3,4).
But, alas, "this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19). In Jesus' day only a few believed on Him and were freed from darkness. The majority believed not, and were condemned (judged) already (John 3:18). Such is the case today. One is either a believer and in the Light, or an unbeliever abiding in the darkness of sin, and in danger of eternal death.
Have you heeded the "call" of the Saviour "out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9)? "He that heareth My word and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation [judgment]; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24). Allow the life-giving Word of our Creator God to be realized in new creation in your soul—"Let there be light"!
