In the reptile house at the zoo we notice the snakes at certain times of the year cast off their skin. Yet, notwithstanding this change, they remain snakes. Men may change the form and habit of their lives without having a change within, and be unsaved still. Our Lord insisted upon a radical change from within—the new birth.

A census taker called on a Christian home and was handed the family Bible in which were recorded the names of the various members of the family. After looking down the list of names, the officer said, "I cannot understand it; for instance, here's a name with the date of birth, and on the next line it says born again at another date. Are they the same person?" Within the answer to that question lies the whole secret of the new creation.

The word translated born "again" in John 3:3,7, has also the meaning "from above" as it is translated in John 3:31 and elsewhere. In Luke 1:3 the same word is translated "from the very first," and in Acts 26:5, "from the beginning." Nicodemus needed a birth which should be new in the very beginnings of its origin.
