Question & Answer
QUESTION: Psalm 119:11 says, "Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee." How can I hide God's Word in my heart?
ANSWER: The answer to this good question is so important for the spiritual health of every Christian. Only as God's Word is hid in our hearts can we have victory over sin, the world, and Satan. In answering your question we need to ask another question: What does the use of the word, "heart," in the Bible represent? The following quotation is from the Hastings Bible Dictionary. "The heart is used figuratively in the Bible for the hidden springs of our personal life. It is used to describe the feelings, the will, and even the intellect. The heart as lying deep within, contains the hidden man (1 Peter 3:4), the real man. It represents the true character but conceals it."
In order to hide God's Word in our heart we need to make that Word become the basis of our thinking, our reasoning and our actions. How does that take place? First of all by reading God's Word; secondly by meditating on what we have read; thirdly by memorizing some of what you read.
Reading God's Word. In order to do this consistently on a daily basis you need to pick a time, preferably in the morning, when you take at least a half hour to read the Bible. Pick a place where it is quiet and you can be alone with the Lord. Begin this quiet time with a short word of prayer. Psalm 25:4,5 are good verses to include in your prayer. If you are aware of any sin or failure in your life, confess this to the Lord (Psalm 66:18; 1 John 1:9). Pick a book of the Bible to read. To begin with, choose one of the Gospels or Epistles in the New Testament.
Meditating on God's Word. Meditating means that you need to think about and reflect upon what you have read. In doing this we need to ask ourselves questions and also write down a few thoughts or any questions we have on the verses we have read. Some questions could be: "What can I learn from this?" or "How do these verses relate to my life?" or "What do these verses teach me regarding the character of God?" In Joshua 1:8 and Psalm 1:1-3 we find that spiritual prospering and good success are results of meditating upon God's Word.
Memorizing God's Word. A good time to memorize the Scriptures is in connection with our daily Bible reading. When we memorize portions of God's Word we then can repeat them to ourselves for meditation at any time of the day or night.
As you read the Bible, memorize portions of it, and meditate upon it, you will find that God's Word will be hidden in your heart. It will control your inmost thoughts and outward actions. It will be your spiritual food, giving you the strength to serve and glorify the Lord. You will experience a joy and a peace in your life. The world and its temptations will no longer appeal to you.
—John D. McNeil
"Thy Word"—the best possession.
"Hid in my heart"—the best place.
"Not sin against Thee"—best purpose.
Reading the Word of God is good,
Meditating on it is better,
Memorizing it is best of all.
