An Invalid's Fruit
Some time ago, a young woman who was sick and bedfast for a long time had been brought to know the Lord Jesus Christ as her Saviour, and sought to let her light shine. She longed that others might know her joy, but other than nurses and friends, saw no one to whom she might speak.
Love found a way. The invalid wrote the gospel message on scraps of paper and threw them or placed them around her, praying that they might be used of God in blessing. The nurses, who found the papers on the floor, picked them up and put them in the trash can, calling them "religious ravings."
One day a woman came to her room and asked, "Are you the one who writes texts on scraps of paper?" "Yes," she replied. "Well," said the visitor, "until a few days ago I was an infidel, but while working in the laundry I found a piece of crumpled paper in the trash can. Opening it I read, 'Where will you spend eternity? Look to Jesus and be saved.' It was God's message to me and now I am saved."
Some weeks elapsed. A young man called, asking to see the invalid. He was the son of the laundress. He had come to tell her that his mother had died, and that, before she lost consciousness, she desired him to tell her that she was now with Christ.
What a delight and encouragement this evidence of the power of God in the gospel must have been to the one whose sphere of service seemed so limited, and yet whose heart longed to make known the good news. Where the good seed of the Word is sown and watered by prayer, faith can look confidently to God for the increase.
The Gospel is still the power of God unto salvation to every one who believes, and the blessed word of invitation is still "Come." "Come thou" (Genesis 7:1). "Come now" (Isaiah 1:18). "Come unto Me [Jesus]" (Matthew 11:28). "Him that cometh unto Me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37). Coming is the saving act of faith that brings the sinner to Jesus in repentance of his sins and trust in the person and work of Christ as Saviour. Have you come to Jesus like the laundry woman did?
