Full of Wonder

Isaac Watts has written, "Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where'er I turn my eye: If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky." The honest heart can only echo these sentiments, for truly every work of God in creation is a marvel, worthy of admiration. God's creation is so wonderful that it is beyond human description or thought, much less human capabilities to bring to pass. When I look upon my new grandchild, I am made to wonder at the way man is "fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are Thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well" (Psalm 139:14). Thus we have the word—Wonderful! Sadly, common usage of this word wonderful includes much that is vastly inferior to the real meaning as given in Scripture, and in the dictionary.

Only the Lord can do great wonders (Psalm 136:4) for His Name alone is Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6; Judges 13:18, see Question & Answer). We also read of Him, "Blessed be the Lord God … who only doeth wondrous things" (Psalm 72:18). Everything He does answers to His Name whether it be in the creation and sustaining of all things, in the providing of salvation for sinful man, or in all of His ways of divine providence. He who is Wonderful can only do wonderful works!

No doubt the wonders of God's spiritual, new creation exceed those of His natural creation. Samuel Davies wrote in the 1700's, "Great God of wonders! all Thy ways are matchless, God-like and divine; But the bright glories of Thy grace, above Thine other wonders shine." J. H. Jowett concurs when he says, "To read graces in a life once scorched and blasted by sin is more wonderful than to grow flowers on a cinder heap." To these testimonies every heart agrees which has known the wonder of God's power to deliver from the bondage of sin and to make a new man in Christ.

Most "wonderful in our eyes" also is the fact that "the stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner" (Psalm 118: 22, 23). Ephesians 2:19-22 tells us that "Jesus Christ Himself [is] the chief corner stone" of a temple composed of believers today, a "spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Christ Jesus" (1 Peter 2:4-8). Through man's refusal of Christ which led to His crucifixion followed by His resurrection, Christ is now the "Head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:11,12). Only those who trust this blessed One alone for salvation will know the wonder of being built upon Christ, cleansed from sin, eternally saved, members of His Body and of His Church.

Another of God's wonders is His Holy Word. "Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them" (Psalm 119:129). The student of this Book finds it to be full of wonder. Every book, every chapter, every verse, every word causes the seeking heart to marvel at the perfections of the revelation of Him who is the living Word (John 1:1,2), whose name is Wonderful. "Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law" (Psalm 119:18).

May these truths arouse in His children the awe and admiration that lead us "to praise the Lord … for His wonderful works to the children of men" (Psalm 107:8,15,21,31) and to ever "Remember His wonderful works that he hath done" (Psalm 105:5; 111:4).

Following are some things the Scriptures reveal about His wonderful works:
