Knowing the Way
Thomas did not understand the Lord's words, but he did ask the right question, "How can we know the way?" (John 14:5). If only everyone would ask that question of the Lord Jesus! What is the Way to heaven? His response to all is, "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (vs.6).
Jesus did not say, "I show the way, or I reveal the truth, or I give Life," but that I AM those things. Some say that Jesus shows man how to live, and that the way of salvation is to walk as He did. Christ never said, "I am your example, imitate Me, and you will be saved." What man—who is lost and dead in sins, without the strength to do anything—needs is not one to show him a way to salvation but one to save him. When our Lord declares "I AM the Way," He means that He is the One who, by His death on the Cross, has become the Way for lost sinners to be saved and draw near to God. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life" (John 3:36).
