The Becoming "I AM"
Some Hebrew scholars see in Jehovah's name the thought of "becoming," the self-existent One who reveals Himself, and becomes something to someone. God is the "becoming One" in the sense that He becomes this or that to His people, according to their need. In this way He is continuously revealed as the all-sufficient One, the "I AM." It is by this Name that the blessings God had in mind for man are disclosed in His beloved Son sent into this world.
The Lord Jesus Christ makes it quite clear that He is the "I AM" (see Q&A, page 31). Thus in John's Gospel, where Christ is seen as the Son of God, we find many instances of Him referring to Himself by that Name, "I AM." In each of the many places in the Scriptures where we find the "I AM," we find a fuller revelation of Jesus disclosed in blessing to man.
Does this hold true for today, in days of increasing evil and apostasy, so long after Jesus walked this earth? The answer can be found in the declaration of the newly revealed "I AM" in Moses' day, "This is My name forever, and this is My memorial unto all generations" (Exodus 3:15). What was true for Israel, and true for the disciples of Christ while He was here on earth, is true for you and me. There is never a time, never a generation, and never a century when He is not the "I AM" who becomes the Saviour, Sustainer, and Shepherd, yea, all that is needed, to sinful man.
