Above Every Name

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11).

The name of Jesus was given to the Saviour of mankind at His lowly birth, and though He was despised and rejected of men, yet that name stands for all that is most precious to God, and should be most precious to all men.

His name means Saviour, even as the angel declared before His birth, "Thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Did anyone ever more fully answer to their name than He? It was that name which Pilate fastened above the cross. The inscription read, "This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." Jesus, the Lord of glory, the Creator of the universe, came down from the very bosom of God to identify Himself in love and grace with mankind, but He was spurned and refused. Because of who He is and what He has suffered for God's glory and the salvation of man, God is going to cause every creature to honor and extol the name of Jesus.

What is the name of Jesus to you? Have you confessed that name to God and to man as the one only name "given among men, whereby you must be saved"? Or are you one who despises that name, and drags it down into the mire by taking it upon your lips in profanity? Think of the fearful sin this is in God's sight because of the value of that name to Him!

Even if you have not debased the name of Jesus by profanity, if you have not trusted that name, you are lost! Jesus came "to seek and to save that which was lost"(Luke 19:10). No matter how greatly you may have sinned, God will forgive you your sins for Jesus' sake (1 John 2:12) when you look to the risen Saviour at God's right hand, and believe that He died for you. Willingly bow your knee now to the name of Jesus in repentance and faith. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved."
