Answers to Riddle
From Reader Responses
"Your delightful magazine came today with the usual thought-provoking puzzle. Here is my solution:
- It must be an animal of some kind.
- Animals never had the law—no transgression!
- Must travel long distances.
- He swallowed Jonah.
- He vomited Jonah.
- To travel from pole to pole—must swim.
- Must leave fluorescent tracks in the water when swimming.
- After death, material could be obtained to give light.
- The name can be found in Gen. 1:21; Ezek. 32:2; Job 7:12; Matt. 12:40.
- It MUST be the whale!
The one you had listing the fifteen books of the Bible I used once in a large Sunday School. It created quite a bit of interest. Thank you for sending it to me.
Yours through grace, M.W.S."
"My answer to the puzzle: Whale (that swallowed Jonah).
Line 2 - Gen. 1:21, fifth day.
Line 1 - Gen. 1:26; sixth day.
Line 4 - Probably refers to Matt. 12:40
Line 6 - Gen. 2:19.
Lines 13-14 - Jonah 1:17.
Lines 15-16 - Jonah 2:10.
Lines 17-24 - Well known facts about whales. The blubber has lighted many homes, but as a picture of Christ's death and resurrection, it has given spiritual light as well.
Lines 29-32 - The whale is not made in the image of God. Death is merely a return to dust.
The above are my reasons for thinking 'whale.'
In Christ's name, R.I."
