"Behold My Servant"

What a wonder of all wonders that the Mighty Creator should lay aside the outward display of His glory of deity and appear on earth as a servant!

In the prophecy of Isaiah 43:1, God's Spirit proclaims, "Behold My Servant;" in Isaiah 53:11, He is called, "My Righteous Servant;" in Isaiah 43:24, we hear Him say to the people, "Thou hast made Me to serve with thy sins." Hence, as the Mighty God, the omniscient Jehovah came into the world to be the faithful, devoted, toiling Servant. Mark 10:45 declares, "The Son of Man is come, not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many."

What a ministry it was! What untiring service was His—instant in season, out of season! His eternal love carried Him on moment by moment, from early to late, to meet the needs of His creature man with whom He found all His delights (Proverbs 8:31).

"Behold My Servant," says Jehovah. See Him in His service of love as He takes up little children in His arms to bless them. See Him, though weary with His journey, going out of His way to seek the Samaritan woman with a deep need at Jacob's well. See Him joining the funeral procession, touching the coffin of the only son of his widowed mother, and hear Him say, "Young man, I say unto thee arise!" See Him, moved with compassion for the multitude, feeding 5000 men besides women and children in the wilderness. See Him, in loving service to His disciples, stooping to wash their feet. Yes, See Him, as portrayed throughout the four Gospels, in that wonderful life lived as the obedient servant of the Father, always doing all things to please Him. And, as John writes, "There are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the book that should be written" (John 21:25).

Greater still, See Him in His work of love and service on the Cross of Calvary where He gave His life a ransom for many! Oh, who can tell the greatness and vastness of that service? He cried, "It is finished": the work of redemption was completed, and at such a cost!

Nor is His service for His own at an end. He continues to serve us in the glory. As High Priest and Advocate, He serves each soul who trusts in Him. How little we actually know of the meaning of that constant and extensive service on behalf of every single one of us! Some day, all will be revealed to us how His service was towards us in ways we had no knowledge of. How many snares and attacks of the enemy He has frustrated! How many things He has kept from coming upon us by His intercessory prayer! How often, too, He has gone after us, when gone astray, and restored our souls to the enjoyment of our fellowship with Him and His Father! True it is, indeed, "He ever liveth to make intercession" for us; and, "If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous" (Heb. 7:25; 1 John 2:1).

Then, when at last we See Him in the glory, we shall behold Him face to face, and even then His loving service will not have ceased. We read in the Lord's own words referring to His coming again for us in Luke 12:37, "He shall gird Himself, make them sit down to meat and will come forth and serve them." Just what all this will entail, we don't full know now, but the love that brought us to the Father's house, by His service on the cross, will continue to serve us in eternity. Think of that!

Surely, all this, and as we heed the entreaty of the Spirit of God: "Behold My Servant," creates a deeper longing in our souls to follow Him and serve Him more faithfully while we await His return.
