Rescue the Perishing

This is the title to one of the 8,000 songs written by Fanny Jane Crosby. Blinded at the age of six weeks by the wrong medicine being put in her eyes, she trusted in Christ after hearing the song At the Cross and devoted her life of 95 years to composing and probably has written more songs than anyone else in history. Some of her best-known songs are Blessed Assurance, Close to Thee, Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross, Safe in the Arms of Jesus, Behold Him Standing at the Door, Jesus is Tenderly Calling The Home, and Rescue the Perishing.

The story is told how after going to a rescue mission one night, Fanny's heart was so burdened for those needy men who had no hope or purpose in life and were forgotten by virtually everyone, that she composed the hymn, Rescue the Perishing:

Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o'er the erring one, Lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save.

Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

Is there someone in your life—a friend, relative, neighbor, business associate, or an acquaintance—who needs to be snatched from sin and death? Does someone mean enough to you so that you will go out of your way to tell him that Jesus cares and wants to save? People are dying in sin. It is our responsibility as Christians to rescue the perishing.

"Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3).

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
