The Power of Song
An interesting report is told by a Christian who was in Korea during the war there, just after the city of Seoul was retaken by the U.N. forces. A group of 600 North Korean prisoners of war were asked their preferred choice of a chaplain. Figures revealed their choice to be: 4 wanted a Buddhist chaplain, 2 wanted a Confucius chaplain, and 594 wanted a Christian chaplain. These latter were asked why they wanted a Christian, and their answer was: "We want the religion that has the Jesus song."
These men had tasted all the gall and bitterness of misery and sin in a songless world of despair. They wanted peace and joy, something to fill them with song and hope. In none of their heathen religions could such be found; only in the Lord Jesus Christ. Psalm 40, verse 3, says, "He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord." Let us now call the Philippian jailor to the witness stand—Acts 16:25,30.
—Last Day Messenger
Break forth and sing the song
Of "Glory to the Lamb!"
Wake every heart and every tongue
To praise the Saviour's name.
Sing of His dying love;
Sing of His rising power;
Sing how He intercedes above
For those whose sins He bore.
Soon shall we hear Him say,
"Ye ransomed pilgrims, come;"
Soon will He call us hence away,
And take us to His home.
Then shall each raptured tongue
His fullest praise proclaim;
And sweeter voices wake the song
Of "Glory to the Lamb!"
—Isaac Watts, 1709
