The Modern City of Jerusalem
Today the city of Jerusalem is built on the site of the ancient ruins. The place where the temples of Solomon, Zerubbabel and Herod stood is now occupied by a Moslem mosque, the Dome of the Rock and called also the Mosque of Omar. This was built in 686 A.D. Under General Allenby, in World War I, Palestine was conquered by the British and Jerusalem surrendered December 9, 1917. Since then, Palestine has had remarkable growth. Zionism has flourished and the State of Israel has existed since May 14, 1948. Jerusalem is a busy capital, though divided at present by the Jews and Arabs.
