The Word of God

It is true that "not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble" (1 Cor. 1:26) on this earth have valued the Word of God and derived the needed wisdom from it. However, it does not say, "not any," and by grace some wise and highly-esteemed among men have revered the Word, read it, obeyed it and urged others to read and believe also.

In our feature article you will notice the testimony of one of the Presidents of the United States, Woodrow Wilson. The letter was written from the White House during the trying times of World War I.

One thing which particularly impresses me is at the close of the letter: "When you have read the Bible you will know that it is the Word of God, because you will have found it to be THE KEY to your own heart, your own happiness, and your own duty."

The entire paper, entitled "The President's Message," by J.W.H. Nichols (now with the Lord) gives further comments President Wilson made in a lecture given in Denver, Colorado. This will give an insight to the faith he had in the Word.

Along with this, I desire in these brief notes to emphasize truth as to THE KEY to the understanding and reception of the truths of the Word of God. The Bible is unlike any other book. There are depths which are unsearchable. On the other hand, the words used can be quite easily comprehended by even a child.

There is a danger in overlooking the fact that spiritual truth can be known only through divine power. The power of the Holy Spirit is needed to comprehend the spiritual meaning of the statements of even the simplest words. The common idea to make translations "easy to understand" is a dangerous one, making human intellect the teacher. This could lead to a mere acceptance of statements or facts intellectually perceived without any work being done in the soul at all.

Man comes to know God through a sense of his deep need as a sinner, which the Word first of all reveals to him. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to convict and to bring to repentance, and then uses the Scripture to point to Christ, the Saviour of sinners, for faith to receive.

1 Corinthians 2:11 clearly states the necessity of the use of THE KEY to the Scriptures, first for salvation and then for instruction in the deep things of God, of which the "natural," or unsaved man can have no understanding at all. Receiving the Word by faith, however, gives the person eternal life and a divine nature, and the divine Teacher—the Holy Spirit, who is THE KEY. The Book is then opened for "your own heart, your own happiness, and your own duty."
