Wanted -- Voices for the Chorus

Years ago, a friend of ours was walking along a main thoroughfare when he passed a music store in the window of which was displayed a large notice of some choral society. The words that caught his eye, printed in extra large type, were these: "WANTED—VOICES FOR THE CHORUS."

Acting upon a sudden impulse, he entered the shop. He found it empty, save for one man dusting the pianos.

"I am on the lookout for voices for a great chorus in which I am interested," said our friend, "and it occurred to me that I might drop in here and see if you can help."

"Well," said the man, "that's strange, for we are interested in a chorus! Perhaps you didn't notice the card we have in the window."

"Oh! yes, indeed I did. It was in fact just that which led me to turn in here."

"Well, sir, I don't know that we can do anything to help you, for we are short of voices ourselves, and so shall want to keep all we can get."

"There will be no difficulty about that. The chorus that I am getting voices for will not at all clash with yours."

"I see: but what is the chorus in which you are interested?"

"I am interested in the Hallelujah Chorus."

"Indeed, that's strange! Our society hopes to perform the Hallelujah Chorus this winter."

A few more remarks were exchanged, when suddenly our friend laid his hand on the man's arm, and quietly remarked, "There is one point that hitherto I have omitted to mention. The Hallelujah Chorus for which I am anxious to secure voices is to be performed not on earth but in heaven! The Saviour is to be the object of it. Redeemed sinners will take part in it and the theme of their song will be, "Thou art worthy . . . for Thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation." Now I just want to ask you a personal question. When heaven's great Hallelujah Chorus is sung and the 'voices' are gathered together for it, will you be there?"

Dumbfounded by this totally unexpected turn to the conversation, the man listened in quietness as the Gospel message was set before him. He was reminded of his own sinfulness, and "the old, old story" of the atoning death of Christ, and of His resurrection, and of forgiveness of sins preached in His name, was made plain.

Minute succeeded minute, and not a soul entered the shop. But as our friend finished his message, the bell of the shop door rang and a customer entered. The man seized his hand, and with tears in his eyes said, "Thank you, sir, thank you! In all my life I have never had anyone speak to me as you have done."

When our friend told that story to us he added, "I think that I shall meet in heaven that man from the music store."

Faith in Christ will make salvation yours. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). Then you will assuredly have a part in heaven's great Hallelujah Chorus.

But whatever may be your attitude, it is true that God wants you for that chorus. You are WANTED! wanted by God!
