Who is Jesus?
There is no more important question to be faced. Upon the right answer rests the eternal welfare of the soul.
When Jesus was here He asked His disciples, "Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am?" Their answer showed the ignorance of men generally based upon human reasoning and unbelief. Some said He was a good man; others that He deceived the people. Some said He was a teacher, or a prophet. Alas, many today see no more in Him than that and even deny openly that He is God.
But Jesus turned to His own disciples and asked, "But whom do ye say that I am?" Without hesitation, "Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." The Lord then replied, "Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven." Peter had the right answer because He believed the revelation of God the Father concerning His Son. (Matt. 16:13-17).
By that same revelation, we may know the answer as well. The theme of the Holy Scriptures is Christ:
IN PROMISE - God presents Him as "the Seed" of the woman who would bruise Satan's head, while having His heel bruised. This is a reference to Christ's death and victory on Calvary's cross (Gen. 3:15).
IN PROPHECY - Isaiah receives a sign from the Lord Himself, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel" (7:14).
Also in Isaiah 9:6, "Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given," is none other than a reference to "the Seed" of the woman. Matthew relates the fulfillment of these prophecies. The angel of the Lord told Joseph that which was "conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matt. 1:20,21). He then declares it to be the fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14. Hence, "the Seed" of the woman, "the Child born," and "a Son given" is none other than Jesus, which means "Jehovah the Saviour;" and "Emmanuel" which means "God with us."
IN THE GOSPELS - John reveals Him as "the Word"—the expression of God's thoughts; the One who "was with God and was God" (John 1:1). The eternal Son of the eternal Father is designated in John 1:14 and 18 as "the only begotten Son"—begotten of the Father and ever in the bosom of the Father. Also, the Lord in John 8:58 declares, "Before Abraham was, I AM," thus asserting His eternal Being as the I AM—the self-existing One, to which He refers Himself many times. Then, to the blind man in John 9, He presents Himself as "the Son of God," and the man whose eyes He opened said, "Lord, I believe. And He worshipped Him" (2:38).
IN THE EPISTLES - Colossians 1:16-18 reveals that Jesus is the Creator of all things; also, in resurrection as the Firstborn from the dead, He is Head of the Church which is His body. Also, Hebrews 1:2 and 3 sets forth seven expressions of the infinite fulness of the Lord Jesus, namely: 1st, Heir of all things; 2nd, "By whom also He made the worlds;" 3rd, He is the brightness of God's glory; 4th, He is the express image, or impress, of His substance; 5th, He upholds all things by the Word of His power; 6th, He is the One who forgave our sins; 7th, He has sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
WHO IS JESUS? - The centurion at Calvary said, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matt. 27:54). Thomas, upon seeing Him after His resurrection exclaimed, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28).
Yes, all Scripture reveals Jesus to be Christ, the Son of God incarnate—"God . . . manifest in flesh" (1 Tim. 3:16). The Name, Jesus, is "exalted . . . above every name; that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father" (Phil. 2:9-11).
Now then, these things were written in God's revelation, the Bible, "that YE MIGHT BELIEVE that JESUS is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through HIS NAME" (John 20:31).
Let me mention one more Scripture that proves the importance of knowing aright the answer to WHO IS JESUS? "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
Reader, do you know Him and own Him as Thomas said, "My Lord and my God"?
