The Fatal Flower

Among the many places of interest with which America abounds, possibly none has a greater attraction to the traveler than the Niagara Falls. The majestic grandeur inspires the beholder with awe. It makes him feel how insignificant he is and how mighty must be that One who not only created but now upholds such mighty works, holding them, as it were, in the hollow of His hand. What an Almighty God! And think, friend, it is with such an One we have to do!

A party of tourists was one time visiting the Falls. One of their number was a young lady whose vivacity and sparkling wit made her the life of the company. From one place and another she had collected curios and mementos, and she must have one from Niagara. Noticing a tiny but pretty flower growing on a bit of earth that jutted out from the river bank a few feet below the place where the water takes its fearful plunge, she determined to have it. In order to get it she had not only to go to the edge of that fearful chasm, but lean over it. Before a warning word could reach her ears from the guide, she stooped over, and in less time than it takes to write this, the mossy bank had crumbled beneath her feet, and she was thrown into the seething foam beneath. It was a fatal step by which she lost her life, and all for a paltry flower that would have faded in a day.

Possibly someone says within himself, "What a fool to run such risks"; and we re-echo the sentiment. It surely was folly of the worst king.

The prize was not worth the risks she took. But this leads us to ask a question regarding a matter too often forgotten. We refer to the things of Eternity! We suppose you are aware of the fact that you are going on to the meeting with God. Then, what about the future? Are you prepared to enter Eternity? Where would you spend it? We remind you there are but two destinies there, as there are but two ways to it here. The two destinies are heaven and hell, and the ways are the narrow and broad. The travelers on the narrow way are the saved, and those on the broad way are the lost! "Where art thou?" (Genesis 3:9).

Here is a young man boasting in his youth, his strength, his manhood. He grasps for his coveted pleasure, or honor, or position, and thinks he has not time to occupy his mind with things eternal. Or it may be a young woman, beautiful and accomplished, but like the butterfly she flits from one scene of pleasure to another, and lives on without God, without Christ, and without hope! What a folly! If she but knew it, there are pleasures for evermore in Christ, pleasures that cannot be rudely broken in upon by the hand of death. And there are "honors" in Christ, for those who believe on Him are to live and reign with Him eternally. And what shall we say of the "position" to which such are raised, and their "wealth"? How often do the world's riches take wings and fly away, but in Christ there are eternal riches—they never fail. You risk too much. Remain as you are, unsaved friend; go in for the world and you will likely lose what you are seeking to grasp, and your soul as well. What a solemn thought it is, that you may be hurried from time into eternity at any moment, and, if Christless, to spend that eternity in the lake of fire! Cease such folly, and flee to the Lord Jesus Christ this moment.
