Living By the Day
We seem powerless to change this world of strife and confusion in which we live. Thus the conviction presses upon us that as individuals we can live only one day at a time, giving our best efforts for the right and trusting God for the rest.
Great importance is attached to the single day in God's Word as seen in its frequent recurrence. Proverbs 27:1: "Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a DAY may bring forth." The Lord Jesus gave us the petition, "Give us THIS DAY our daily bread," and again in the same chapter, Matthew 6, "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the DAY is the evil thereof."
The Shepherd Psalm (23rd) so fittingly expresses our Father's DAILY care in His provision for our every need.
The Lord is my Shepherd, I'll not want:
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green: He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.
My soul He doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of Righteousness,
E'en for His own name's sake.
Yea, tho' I walk in death's dark vale,
Yet I will fear none ill;
For Thou art with me; and Thy rod
And staff me comfort still.
My table Thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.
Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me;
And in God's house forevermore
My dwelling-place shall be.
