The Fish of Life

The following letter was received by Moments With The Book from a reader in a third world country:

"I gave my life to Jesus Christ through the work of your magazine, Moments for You. I was living in sin and a miserable life, though I was a church goer. I attended service every Sunday, yet I didn't know Christ. I didn't know what it meant to be saved, though I was a communicant.

"One day a page of Moments For You was used to wrap a fish for me. After I was finished eating the fish, I used it to wipe my hands. Later I opened it and read where I could see clearly the words, 'If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness' (1 John 1:8,9).

"After reading it again and again, I fell on my knees and confessed my sins to God and found forgiveness."

This person was seeking food for his body and ended up receiving spiritual food that saved his soul!

During the earthly ministry of Jesus (we read of this in John chapter 6 of the Bible) He one day miraculously fed 5,000 men, beside women and children, from just five loaves and two small fishes. This huge multitude had gathered to hear Jesus and see His miracles. The next day they came to Him again, seeking bread to satisfy their empty stomachs. They were only interested in their temporal need, but Jesus was concerned about their spiritual need and the eternal welfare of their souls.

Jesus went on to declare that "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). This is far more important than physical food. If a man does not eat of the Bread of Life, he will die in his sins and perish forever. Salvation is in the Lord Jesus Christ alone.

Jesus continues to explain to the multitude that "Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life" (John 6:53,54). He was referring to the time when on the cross of Calvary He would offer Himself as a sacrifice for sin; when His body and blood would be separated in death. "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

To eat His flesh and drink His blood is to believe that He died for me, for my sins, and by faith trust Him as my Saviour. Eating a meal of fish makes the fish become a part of my body. In the same way, the Bread of Life becomes my Saviour when I feed upon Him as the One "who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20), confessing my sins to Him as the writer of the letter did.

Dear friend, are you interested in spiritual realities? Are you seeking forgiveness of sins? If so, you need only to eat the Bread of Life and live forever (John 6:58).
