Editor's Notes--What is Death?

Every Autumn we see in nature an illustration of death. The broad-leaf trees, so lusciously green in Spring and Summer, soon turn to various colors and finally drop off the tree to the ground. So it is with all mankind. The lifespan of each may be different, but, oh, how short is the Summertime of life before death sets in! As the leaf is separated from the tree and life on earth is over forever, so the spirit and soul of the person is separated from his body at death to spend eternity either in heaven or hell. All must fall by the sickle of death, for "It is appointed unto men once to die" (Hebrews 9:27).

What is the Cause of Death?
Let the Word of God reply, for only in the Bible do we get the true and divine answer. In Romans 5:12, God says: "As by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." In the garden of Eden the Lord God commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He said, "In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:17). Adam ate of the fruit in the face of God's command not to do so, and became guilty of plain disobedience. As the federal head of all mankind, he passed on this sinful nature to everyone born into the world since. And like Adam, who eventually died (Genesis 5:5), so the seed of physical death is in us all.

God's Remedy for Death
On the Cross of Calvary, Christ "suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). By His resurrection from the dead He became the Head of New Creation of which every believer in Him is identified. All such are "passed from death to life." They possess God's gift of "eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord," and "shall never perish" (Romans 6:23; John 10:28).

An Urgent Appeal
Listen! God speaks: "Ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). God alone knows the appointed time of your death. HE WILL keep His appointment with you, but ARE YOU ready for that appointment? Death is an experience you can never profit by. Once you breathe your last in this world you are forever either in the place of bliss with Christ, or in the blackness of darkness with Satan and all the unbelieving of men. There is a great gulf between, from which none can pass from one side to the other (See Luke 16:26). NOW is the day of salvation for you to accept Christ as your Saviour and be saved. Please do not put this paper down until you have read the entire contents. Your response to the truth of God contained herein will determine your welfare for time and eternity!
