A Look At the Eye

The eye looks out at me from behind the refractor. The patient is amazed as I tell him, "The eye looks healthy, the retina is fine, the lens is clear"—but the eye is sightless. Perhaps because of an optic nerve defect or amblyopia (lazy eye) the sightless eye stares, blinks and sees nothing. Then I'm reminded of Jesus' words about those who have eyes but don't see (Mark 8:18). Even now you are using your eyes, but how is your spiritual sight? What good are healthy eyes if one is spiritually blind?

I am often amazed at this miracle, the eyeball. Really an extension of the brain, containing millions of nerves, its movements are precisely controlled by six special muscles. The eye is like a camera, but consider these features—it has auto-focus, auto-aim, instant color, 3-dimensional pictures, auto storage and instant recall! This living, self-repairing organ has features beyond any camera.

The eye has puzzled Darwin and his followers. They can't begin to explain how such an instrument could evolve. No problem for me. After examining over 40,000 eyes I know this precision, living instrument has a Designer and Creator. It did not evolve!

Real seeing is focusing on God and understanding how His Son, Jesus Christ can be our personal Saviour. Make sure you see what really counts. "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

Daily in my office I sharpen the patient's focus. But it is even more important to focus on the spiritual eyesight and on what God says.
