George Moore's Text

Each year George Moore (1806-1876), the English merchant and philanthropist, gave large donations to various charities and organizations. He enjoyed giving. Since his younger days he had traveled to every city of importance in Great Britain and America on behalf of his prospering business.

At the age of forty-five, it suddenly occurred to him that neither his great success, nor his immense popularity, nor his noble benefactions could atone for his sins or bring peace to his increasing sense of defilement. He said, "I am painfully aware of the depravity of my own heart." For two years he had trouble sleeping, kneeling in anguish beside his bed praying for deliverance. With bitter tears he sought salvation and could not find it.

Then, like a flash, the light came to him and all his wretchedness was gone. It was a text of Scripture that made the difference. He had been confusing the salvation of his soul with his moods, feelings, and sensations until the truth of these words of God came home to his heart: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My Word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation [judgment], but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24). Upon hearing this great promise of God, George Moore believed Him implicitly and entered into peace. He said, "I have nothing to rest upon but Christ; yet surely that is enough for me!"

Thus this businessman began his spiritual pilgrimage at the height of his illustrious career when he made the greatest journey any man can make—he passed from death unto life!
