Why This Waste? (Mark 14:4)
WASTE! how much there is of it! Waste on food, waste on clothing, on furnishings, on pleasures, on self, self, SELF in a thousand ways. But whoever wasted on Christ? Many have laid down their lives for Him; spent their fortunes for Him; given their two last mites for Him when they might, without blame, have at least kept one. Did one of them waste anything? No, no, NO! There is, there can be, no waste in what is given to Christ.
Have we poured out our possessions, our time, our comfort, our legitimate enjoyments upon His blessed Person and service? Christ says, "Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for My name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life" (Matthew 19:29).
Is all we have merely a cup of water? He says, "Whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward" (Mark 9:41).
What an opening for profitable investment we have in Christ! And no possible chance of losing; no danger of wasting. Today is the day of salvation for sinners—not tomorrow: "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2b). Today also is the day of spiritual investment for believers—not tomorrow. Jesus says, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10); and we know He has the power both in heaven and earth to make good every word of His mouth.
