Bright daylight was replaced by deep darkness. The earth shook with violence, splitting rock and opening tombs. Jesus, the Son of God, died.

The impact of that day 2,000 years ago changed everything and has the power to change your life today. Let’s discover why Jesus died, how He conquered death, and how we can find true life in Him.

Why Do We Die?

No matter how hard we try, we can’t “beat” death. At some point, we must all say goodbye to this world. In the Bible, we learn that death came into the world because of sin: “By one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin” (Romans 5:12). Unless our sin is dealt with, it will separate us from God eternally: “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

But that’s not the end of our story—there is hope!

Why Did Jesus Die?

The answer is so simple—love! God’s great love for you caused Jesus to come down from Heaven’s glory, enter our world of dust and death, and die on a cruel wooden cross. Because Jesus was holy and “did no sin” (1 Peter 2:22), He was uniquely qualified to become our substitute. When He laid down His life, the Bible says He “gave Himself for our sins” (Galatians 1:4). Jesus died for you!

God is holy and righteous—He cannot let sin go unpunished. So Jesus became our substitute, bearing the weight of God’s judgment and paying the ultimate price on the cross. But Jesus’ death is not the final chapter. Three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, conquering sin and death once and for all!

Jesus ascended back to Heaven and God now offers forgiveness to anyone who repents and trusts Jesus as their Savior. To repent is to turn our heart away from sin and toward the only One who can forgive. This is the only way we can have eternal life in the presence of God. Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).

Have you ever realized it was your sins that compelled Jesus to die on the cross? Have you ever felt your need of Him as Savior? These are very important questions to consider, because if you do not trust Him now as your Savior, you will meet Him in eternity as your Judge.

Jesus is the Way to Life

No matter how good or bad you may think you are, God knows you and loves you. That’s why He sent Jesus to set you free from sin and death! You can have peace of mind and peace with God when you repent and trust in Jesus. God has “made peace through the blood of His cross” so He can “reconcile all things unto Himself” (Colossians 1:20). Today, God is inviting you into a saving relationship with Him. Turn to Him, confessing that Jesus is the Son of God who died in your place and rose again to give you new life. He will hear you!

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
